How to make it
Step 11
Wash the jars and dry them completely
Even a trace of water left behind will make the wax pull away from the glass. A final wipe with alcohol is the safe way to be sure.
Step 22
Set the wick dead centre
A drop of hot glue on the wick tab, pressed firmly into the middle of the jar's base, then hold the top of the wick upright with a clothes peg laid across the rim. A wick off centre is a candle that burns down one side.
Step 33
Melt the wax to 80°C
A double boiler and a real thermometer — this is not a step to guess at. Wax taken too hot drives the whole fragrance off before it ever reaches the jar.
Step 44
Take it off and let it fall to 60°C
This is the temperature the fragrance goes in at. Hotter and the scent leaves; cooler and it never binds into the wax.
Step 55
Add the fragrance and stir a full 2 minutes
Actually time it — two minutes, slow circles. Stir less than that and the scent pools at the bottom of the jar, and the candle smells uneven all the way down.

Pour at 55°C, slowly
Pour slowly, down the inside of the glass, leaving about 1 cm clear at the top. Pour fast and you trap air bubbles under the surface.

Do not put them in the fridge
Leave them somewhere out of a draught, at room temperature, for 24 hours. A fridge, or a stream of air-conditioning, gives you a dipped and rippled top.

Trim the wick to 5 mm, then cure two more days
Trim before you label. And if you can wait, leave them two more days before selling — the scent settles fully into the wax, and a cured candle against an uncured one is a difference anyone can smell.
